It's just a small button on Amazon users' recommendation Web pages, but the e-commerce giant's integration with Facebook Connect could light the torch for a major social shopping shift.
Beginning this week, when Amazon users click on the recommendations link from their Amazon homepage, they see a new beta window on the right of the screen that invites them to "Tap into Your Facebook Network."
The tagline says: "Connect to Facebook to get Amazon recommendations for you and discover your friends' Favorites and Likes."
Users can click on the Sign in and Connect button, confirm their Amazon credentials, and they will see the window shown on Mashable here describing the service and asking them to connect with Facebook.
The service warns users that it will share Facebook information about users and their friends with Amazon, which creates a special Facebook recommendations Web page when users agree to the terms.

BlackPad, a possible name for their forthcoming BlackBerry tablet

MobileCrunch reports that RIM recently snatched up BlackPad.com, a possible name for their forthcoming BlackBerry tablet. The device is anticipated to land in pant-suited laps by the end of the year.


In May BGR heard that RIM's tablet would sport an 8.9" screen and would be marketed strictly as a "companion" device, though little has been confirmed as of yet. Except for the fact that the industry has apparently decided that tablets will henceforth be known only as "pads."

The AutoFill feature in Apple’s Safari browser could be abused by attackers to steal user information, according to findings from a security researcher.

Jeremiah Grossman, CTO of WhiteHat Security, noted that in Safari version 4 or 5, the AutoFill feature fills in information such as e-mail addresses and names by default whenever it recognizes a form. The data is pulled from Safari's local operating system address book, and the process occurs whether a person has entered the data on any Web site before or not.

Indonesia seeking compensation for 2 month oil leek in the Timor Sea

Indonesia will seek compensation from Thailand's PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) over an oil spill in the Timor Sea last year, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said on Thursday.

The West Atlas rig -- located off the Western Australian coast and operated by PTTEP Australasia, a unit of PTTEP -- poured oil into Indonesian and Australian waters for over two months after springing a leak in August last year.
Yudhoyono told his cabinet on Thursday he would soon read a report from the transport ministry on the environmental disaster.
"Of course, I will fulfill our obligations to finalize this issue, and put forward a claim to the company that caused this oil spill, while ensuring continued good diplomatic relations with both the government of Australia and the government of Thailand," he said.
He did not say how much compensation Indonesia would seek, but Transport Minister Freddy Numberi told reporters that the spill had caused Indonesia direct losses of 500 billion rupiah ($55.16 million).
The president said the area surrounding Indonesia's southernmost island, Rote Island, had been affected by the spill and deserved "decent compensation."

Mozilla has shipped a mega patch for Firefox to fix a total of 16 security flaws that expose Web surfers to drive-by download, data theft and local bar spoofing attacks.

The latest Firefox 3.6.7 update includes fixes for nine “critical” issues that could be exploited to launch remote code execution attacks. Two of the 16 bugs are rated “high risk” while five carry a “moderate” severity rating.

Baidu Inc of directing users to websites that sell counterfeit drugs, the People's Daily reported on Monday

China's main state-run television station has accused the country's top internet search engine Baidu Inc of directing users to websites that sell counterfeit drugs, the People's Daily reported on Monday.

CCTV reported on Sunday that Baidu and other search engines had profited from promoting three websites offering counterfeit drugs that had duped more than 3,000 people in China, said the newspaper, the mouthpiece of the ruling Communist Party.
Baidu declined comment on the report. In the second quarter, Baidu had a 70.8 percent share of China's search market, according to iResearch data.
A source familiar with the situation told Reuters on Monday that the sites exploited a loophole in the system, piggybacking on legitimate websites to gain access to buy keywords. The source could not be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter.

One of China's biggest ports, Dalian, shut on Monday after an offshore pipeline explosion triggered a major oil spill, forcing a refinery to cut processing and importers to divert cargoes elsewhere.

The aftermath of the weekend fire could disrupt shipments of oil, iron ore and soy and add to pressure for stricter environmental standards in China, already reeling from a toxic copper mine leak in the south of the country which burst into headlines last week amid accusations of a cover up.
The blaze began late on Friday when two pipelines exploded as crude oil was being off-loaded from the Cosmic Jewel, a Liberian-registered ship chartered by PetroChina.
Nobody was hurt, but hundreds of firefighters battled for more than 15 hours to douse the fire, and state media said about 1,500 metric tons of oil had spilled into the sea, causing a 183 sq km (71 sq mile) slick, 50 sq km of which was "severe."

Energy Star has awarded its first rating to a data center, after implementing new data center requirements on June 7. The first award went to NetApp's Research Triangle Park, located in North Carolina, which won 99 out of 100 points on Energy Star's scale--well above the 75 points necessary for a rating.

To lower the energy requirements of their data center, NetApp raised the air supply temperature to 74 degrees (55 to 60 degrees is average). This means that the center can be cooled by outside air for two-thirds of the year. Other changes included cold aisle containment, which separates hot and cold airstreams.
Mark Skiff, Senior Director East Coast Tech Sites for NetApp, said that NetApp had begun working on the center in 2006. The center is used largely for research initiatives, particularly related to storage efficiency and cloud computing technologies.

Google said it has received its last shipment of Nexus One smartphones from manufacturer HTC and will no longer offer the Android 2.1-based handsets when this batch is gone.
However, the company will still provide customer support for current Nexus One customers, which began receiving Android 2.2 upgrades over the air in late June.
Customers will still be able to procure the handset from Vodafone in Europe, KT in Korea and local market retailers such as i Wireless in the midwest U.S, Google said in a statement July 16.
Google will also be offering the Nexus One through a partner for sale to registered developers, who may visit the Android Market Publisher site and log into with their developer account to purchase a Nexus One.

Eli Lilly cuts 340 IT jobs

As part of a large downsizing effort of its labor force in 2010, Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly is cutting 340 information technology jobs, according to an internal announcement obtained by The Indianapolis Star.

Eli Lilly--which manufactures and markets drugs that fight cancer, diabetes, fibromyalgia and erectile dysfunction, among others--announced last year it was planning to cut costs of $1 billion in 2010, and the elimination of 5,500 workers is part of that cost reduction effort.
Eli Lilly has already seen about 140 layoffs, retirements and resignations in IT in 2010, according to the The Indianapolis Star.

British Columbia launched North America's first government-run online casino on Thursday, aiming to take a cut of the big dollars its residents are already gambling over the web.

The western Canadian province could no longer "stand on the sidelines" and lose revenue to the hundreds of off-shore websites available to residents to gamble money, often illegally, officials said.
"The hard reality is this - that activity is not going away," said Housing and Social Development Minister Rich Coleman, whose office oversees the British Columbia Lottery Corporation.
The province's right-of-center Liberal government, which once opposed expansion of land-based casinos in British Columbia, has sought a new revenue source to close an expected C$1.7 billion deficit in this fiscal year.
"British Columbia may be the first jurisdiction in North America to offer games, but I can predict that it won't be the last," Coleman told a ceremony in Vancouver launching the www.playnow.com site.

15 million People Want iTunes in the Cloud


New research by the NPD group confirms a suspicion. Much of the world wants to see iTunes streaming their music from the cloud. And many will pay to make it happen.
According to NPD's polling of 3,862 iTunes users over the age of 13, roughly 25% of iTunes users would be interested in a free-from-anywhere library streaming option—that's a total of 13-15 million customers in the US alone.
Many customers would be interested in an unlimited streaming pay service as well. Provided that it supported multiple devices, NPD estimates that 7 to 8 million iTunes users would be willing to pay a minimum of $10/month to subscribe.
As the NPD points out, that's a billion dollar market in the first year—a market that's only likely to grow as the public understand what the heck this whole cloud thing is, anyway.

EBay Inc was sued for at least $3.8 billion on Tuesday by a Connecticut company that accused the online auctioneer and retailer of infringing six patents to develop lucrative payment systems such as PayPal. According to the complaint filed Tuesday by XPRT Ventures LLC in the federal court in Delaware, eBay allegedly stole information shared in confidence by the inventors on XPRT's own patents, and incorporated it into features in its own payment systems, such as PayPal Pay Later and PayPal Buyer Credit.
XPRT said that when eBay on April 30, 2003 filed a patent application titled "Method and System to Automate Payment for a Commerce Transaction," it failed to tell the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office it knew of XPRT's own patent applications.
By filing for a similar patent, eBay "admitted the patentability of the inventors' claims," the complaint said.
"This involves a trade secret theft, along with sheer patent infringement," said Steven Moore, a partner at Kelley Drye & Warren LLP representing the plaintiff, in an interview. "It is bad enough to take someone's technology, but it is a bit much to use it in your own patent application."
EBay did not immediately return calls and an email seeking comment.

Microsoft’s Bing continued its pattern of incremental gains

Microsoft’s Bing continued its pattern of incremental gains, according to research firm Experian Hitwise, which reported the search engine grew to occupy 9.85 percent of the U.S. search engine market in June.

That represents a 7-percent change from May, when Hitwise estimated Bing’s share of the market at 9.23 percent. Meanwhile, Google continued to dominate with 71.65 percent of the U.S. search engine market, dropped nearly a percentage point since May. Yahoo dipped only slightly, from 14.43 percent to 14.37 percent.

BP was set on Friday to install a bigger cap that could contain almost all the oil leaking from its blownout Gulf of Mexico well, a top U.S. official said.

The Obama administration has been pressing the British energy giant to install the new cap, which could capture up to 80,000 barrels (3,360,000 gallons/12,700,00 liters) of oil a day, versus the 25,000 barrels currently being contained.
The government has estimated the well is leaking a maximum of 60,000 barrels a day, although independent estimates have been as high as 100,000 barrels a day.
Retired Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, who is overseeing the response to the spill, told a news conference that the well could be contained -- but not plugged -- by Sunday or Monday, when the cap was installed on top of it.
"When we have the cap on, and it's sealed and we know that we've got a seal, yes" (it will be contained), Allen said.
BP has been under enormous pressure to halt the oil, which has polluted coastlines on all five U.S. Gulf states, threatened multi-billion dollar fishing and tourism industries and killed birds, sea turtles and dolphins.
It is the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

Google Inc has been given the green light by Beijing to continue operating its Chinese search page, averting a potential shutdown of its flagship search site in the world's biggest Internet market.
Google said last week that it would stop automatically rerouting users to its uncensored Hong Kong-based search page, explaining that Beijing had indicated it would not renew its Internet Content Provider (ICP) license if it continued to do so.
That had prompted speculation that China might use the opportunity to shut down Google's China search page, which would have been a blow to its other business in the country.
"China has renewed our license," a Google spokeswoman told Reuters on Friday. "We are very pleased that the government has renewed our ICP license and we look forward to continuing to provide web search and local products to our users in China."
China Internet analysts and industry watchers welcomed the move as a positive sign but cautioned against heady optimism.
