A new study suggests that few of Alberta's oilsands companies plan to meet tougher government rules on cleaning up their waste.
Last February, the province's energy regulator made those rules stricter, partly in response to public concern about vast, toxic tailings ponds which are now about the size of the city of Vancouver.
The new rules say that companies must start removing solids from the tailings by 2011 and then remove them to a stable disposal area. But a Pembina Institute review of company plans suggests that only two out of nine oilsands projects will meet the new rules.
