Victoria councillors decided today to not develop an area bordered by Douglas, Blanshard, Belleville and Humboldt streets, keeping a park and bowling green intact.
The bowling club that leases the land for $1 a year was in decline but attention to the issue swelled its ranks to 120 members as people sought to keep more green space downtown.
Many people in the neighbourhood protested against the development plan, and the Cridge Park Rescue Society was created with its members saying they want to revitalize the neglected park.
The only councillors to vote against the motion were Geoff Young and Chris Coleman.
